Union leader Ancel Roget walked out of the Industrial Court after 7 p.m. yesterday declaring the strike is on.
He said the strike would be called off if Finance Minister Colm Imbert accepted the advice of Industrial Court judge Albert Aberdeen — that is for the parties— Petrotrin and the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU)— to settle wage negotiations for the period 2011 to 2014 and then enter discussion for the period 2014-2017.
On two occasions yesterday Roget came out with his team with a beaten look as he informed the media that there was no agreement.
Over eight hours of discussions yielded nothing that would cancel the strike action.
The first meeting took place between the OWTU members, led by Roget, and Petrotrin officials, including the company’s president, Fitzroy Harewood, at the Energy Ministry, Tower C of the International Waterfront Centre, Port of Spain, at 10 a.m.
Nearly seven hours later, at around 4.45 p.m. Harewood and Petrotrin members exited the building, jumped into their cars and headed to the Industrial Court.
Moments later, Roget and the OWTU team emerged and informed that the marathon meeting was unfruitful and the strike was still pending some 17 hours away.
