Prakash Ramadhar Give workers share in Petrotrin

HOURS before strike action by Petrotrin workers over non-settlement of wage negotiations, former government minister Prakash Ramadhar has called upon the Government to consider a plan for the workers of Petrotrin to become part owners in the State-owned oil and gas company.
Ramadhar said that while workers must be adequately compensated since the industry is nothing without them, the union may consider settling for less of a percentage increase in wages and accept shares in the company to become part owners of the industry.
In a media release on Saturday, Ramadhar stated: “The people of Trinidad and Tobago must acknowledge the monumental contribution of the oil and gas industry. This industry is nothing without the workers who endure grave dangers and hardships while going about their duties. They must be adequately compensated. Any offer of 0-0-0 rightly must be met with indignation by all right-thinking men and women. That offer is not without precedent and it signals reasonably that it is made in bad faith.”
“May I suggest that, apart from any wage adjustment, the Government considers a plan for the workers of Petrotrin to become part owners in that company. The union may consider settling for less of a percentage increase in wages and accept shares in the company to become part owners of the industry that many would have dedicated their lives to. They would be truly invested in the success and future of the company and the industry.
They would be able to directly deal with the issues of corruption, waste and mismanagement as any other shareholder group. Instead of workers versus company, we would have them nurture it back to better health with innovation and oversight,” said Ramadhar.
“What do we do now when the economy is in a fragile state, possibly on the edge of a precipice? If this and other future negotiations are not handled with openness, fairness and wisdom the consequences to Trinidad and Tobago will be devastating,” said Ramadhar. “The union and our citizens have complained of corruption, mismanagement and wastage in this crucial industry. It is about time that the Government begins to clean the Augean stables and hold an enquiry into the union and workers’ claims and concerns. The time has already come for us to deal with the truth and act on the basis of facts that are provable.”
