Minister of Finance Colm Imbert is being accused of holding the country to ransom over the Petrotrin/OWTU impasse.

Speaking with reporters just before heading into a meeting with the company on Sunday, President General Ancel Roget said the Union is being provoked into a strike. Imbert is currently Acting Energy Minister.

The Union served Petrotrin with strike notice on December 30, 2016 over the Company’s failure to make a “reasonable” offer on salary and wage negotiations for the periods 2011-2014/15 and 2014-2017/18. Petrotrin has made an offer of 0-0-0 for both periods.

The OWTU has said, however, that it is willing to call off the strike scheduled for Monday if the Company settles the negotiations at 10 percent. Failing this, the Union has vowed to proceed with the industrial action as planned.

Imbert has come under fire from the Union for being “silent” and for “hiding” while the impasse continues.

The OWTU warns that the Pointe-a-Pierre refinery is being put at risk with the Minister’s actions.

Roget maintained that the Union is very reasonable, but says it is at its wits end with Imbert, adding that it will strike if it has to prove the Minister’s incompetence.

“If we have to take strike action to get what the workers deserve, well, we have absolutely no problems or qualms in doing that.”

Regarding contingency plans Petrotrin has reportedly activated to ensure the public is not inconvenienced by the strike, the Union leader called on the Minister to tell the nation the cost of those plans on the public purse.

Roget restated that the settlement would not cost the government “one cent” as payments can be made over a period of time.

“We are aware of Petrotrin’s current situation and that is why we are saying this plan addresses levels of inefficiencies, of course we want to rid Petrotrin once and for all of the corruption. We want to also look at the aging infrastructure and asset integrity issues. We want to also look at the health and safety issues all of which at the end of the day will provide a better Petrotrin, a better performing Petrotrin, so that the public and the people of Trinidad and Tobago can benefit.”
