OFFICIALS of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union yesterday erected 14 strike camps outside various locations of State-owned oil and gas company Petrotrin.

OWTU president general Ancel Roget is expected to lead a team of union officials in a meeting with Petrotrin officials at 10 a.m. at Tower C, International Waterfront Centre, Port of Spain today.

Legal strike action notice was served on Wednesday on Petrotrin as the company and the union failed to settle outstanding negotiations to prevent a complete shut-down of operations at the oil and gas company.

Should there be failure to respond to workers’ demands, Roget said employees would walk out of the gates at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

OWTU public relations officer Ozzie Warwick said yesterday the union was in readiness for both the discussions today and possible strike action.

“We are preparing for the meeting (today). But as you can imagine we are also preparing for the actual strike itself,” said Warrick.

“A strike can be averted anytime before. But at the same time we can’t wait for that and then start to prepare. It doesn’t make sense we wait until (today), and go on until the night and then nothing.

“When you serve strike notice, you prepare for strike. You don’t send the strike notice and then not prepare.”

“Expect a strike,” Warwick told the Sunday Express. “Once nothing happens (today), workers will walk out Monday morning and occupy the various strike camps.

“We are very serious about this. We want the matter settled so much so that we are serious about going through with the strike.”
